On Entering St Peters and Seeing The Pieta

Yes
these eyes lift to take in
this magnificent temple
of light and stone
a gilded glory
created in your name

Via angels in azure domes
the sun's fingers still caress
the cool tiled floor and
the mummified bodies
of popes under glass

And yet these feet, these feet
have walked me here to hear
the white marble scream
of another temple
the shattered flesh and bone
of you
flung, fulled used up
across the knees of Mary

Who cradles this trinity
of body, man and god
with such a powerful tenderness
that for a frozen moment
they fuse in the heart
Then in time,
but only in time
the same heart must choose
and in choosing break the form
of one or other

Christ, I know nothing
and yet your peace
broods through
this not knowing
like water through dry land
germinating that dormant seed
which is the source of
soil and soul alike

These feet know the way
like a weary animal
heading home
to wild and secret glory
of the One
